How to create QR codes in ChatGPT and Claude
Ask an AI assistant for a QR code and you often get a description of one, or an image that doesn't scan. Connect a QR service and it makes a real code you can print, change later and track.
Ask ChatGPT or Claude for a QR code and the answer depends on what the assistant can reach. On its own, it may explain how to make one, write code that generates one, or draw something that looks like a QR code but doesn't scan.
Once you connect a QR service, the assistant can make a real code: it creates it in your account, shows you the image, and can change or track it later.
What you need
- A qrlia account. The free plan includes 3 QR codes and works with AI assistants.
- Claude (web, desktop or mobile), Claude Code, or ChatGPT on a plan that supports custom apps.
There is no API key to copy. You sign in to qrlia once and approve what the assistant may do.
Connect qrlia to Claude
- Open qrlia in the Claude connector directory:
claude.ai/directory/connectors/qrlia, and click Connect. - Enter your workspace name, sign in, and allow access.
In Claude Code, run claude mcp add --transport http qrlia https://mcp.qrlia.com/mcp, then type /mcp and sign in.
Connect qrlia to ChatGPT
- In ChatGPT, open Settings → Apps, turn on developer mode under Advanced, and create an app with the URL
https://mcp.qrlia.com/mcp. - Sign in to qrlia when ChatGPT asks, and allow access.
Cursor, VS Code and other MCP clients work with the same URL. The setup page has the details.
What to ask
Plain sentences work. Some examples:
- "Create a QR code for https://example.com called Spring flyer and show me the image."
- "Make a vCard QR code for my business card with my name, phone and email."
- "Change the Spring flyer code to point to https://example.com/summer."
- "Which of my codes were scanned most this month?"
The codes are dynamic: they point to a short link, so you can change the destination later without reprinting.
Using your brand
On paid plans you can describe your brand and the assistant turns it into a saved design: your colours, rounded or dotted modules, your logo in the centre, and a frame with a call to action like "Scan for our menu". Every code that uses the design follows it, and changing the design updates them all.
On the free plan, codes carry the qrlia mark in the centre.
What the assistant may do
The assistant acts as you, with your role in the workspace. You choose whether it can only read, or also create and change codes. You can disconnect it at any time under Settings → Connected apps in qrlia.
