How to change where a QR code points after you've printed it

The menu changed, the event moved, the landing page got a new address. Whether you can fix the QR code that is already printed depends on one thing: is it static or dynamic?

The flyers are printed. The menus are laminated. Then the link changes. Can you change where the QR code points, or do you have to reprint everything?

It depends on whether the code is static or dynamic.

Static codes can't be changed

A static QR code stores the destination itself. If the code says https://example.com/spring-menu, that address is in the black and white squares. Changing it means making a new code, and the old print keeps sending people to the old address.

Most free generators make static codes. They are fine for things that never change, like a Wi-Fi password at home.

Dynamic codes can

A dynamic QR code stores a short link instead, for example qrlia.com/r/AKhq9gC. When someone scans it, the short link sends them on to the real destination. You can change that destination at any time. The printed code stays the same, so nothing needs to be reprinted.

Because every scan passes through the short link, dynamic codes can also count scans and show where they came from.

How to check which one you have

Scan the code with your phone camera and look at the address it shows before you open it.

  • If it shows your own website address, the code is probably static.
  • If it shows a short link on a QR service's domain (or your own short domain), it is dynamic. Only the account that created it can change it.

If it's static, you can't edit it. Make a dynamic code now, so this doesn't happen again on the next print run.

Changing the destination in qrlia

  • Sign in and open the code from your dashboard.
  • Under Edit this code, replace the Target URL.
  • Click Save changes.

The next scan goes to the new address. Changing the destination is included on the free plan.

Or ask your AI assistant

If you have connected qrlia to Claude or ChatGPT, you can make the change in plain language:

"Change the Spring flyer code to point to https://example.com/summer."

The assistant finds the code and updates it. You can also ask it to create a new code and show you the image, or to tell you which codes were scanned most this month. Setup takes about two minutes and needs no API key: how to connect.

Before you print

  • Use a dynamic code for anything that might change: menus, events, campaigns, product pages.
  • Pick a QR service whose short links will keep working. With qrlia on a paid plan, the short link can use your own domain, so the codes stay yours.
  • Scan a test print before the full run.
